August 2007: Blue Mountain Community Church

Back to Past Teams

Extreme home makeover: Guatemala Edition!

In August 2007 we were so blessed by a 20-person mission team from Blue Mountain Community Church in Walla Walla. Twenty-five of us traveled to the village of Aldea de Vasquez where we were very hospitably taken in by the local Mayan people.

Despite our more than 7,000 feet of altitude our Extreme Makeover team completed construction of a home for one abandoned mom and her children and almost completed two more! These 24' x 18', cement block , dirt floor homes have an opening for a door and 3 windows and are a huge blessing to these mothers and their children.

We conducted Sunday School activities, held a community movie night, taught English classes, and brought our very own clown!

The team used their professional skills to provide classes in dental hygiene, cut hair and train local women to administer IV fluids. Our pastor spoke on the local radio station, which required on-air translation from English to Spanish to the local Quiche language.

We also were able to deliver a very generous donation of first aid supplies from College Place Presbyterian Church's Vacation Bible School kids! The team ended one of our final days at Lake Atitlan and played with children at a local orphanage.

Our last day gave them the choice of visiting the historic, colonial town of Antigua or climbing the active lava flowing volcano; Pacaya. Thank you for making a difference for the people of Guatemala, BMCC team! It was an honor to serve with you!
